From Proto-Slavic *mǭka (“flour”). Akin to regional Serbo-Croatian му́ка/múka (“meal”), Slovene móka, Russian мука́ (muká). Non-Slavic cognates include Ancient Greek μάσσω (mássō, “to knead”), German and Old High German mengen (“to mix”).
