Hungarian

Etymology

From Old Hungarian mogyër.

  • The first element (mogy-) is likely from Proto-Ugric *mańć- (man, person), also found in the name of the Mansi (mäńćī, mańśi, måńś). This may be an Indo-Iranian borrowing (compare Sanskrit मनुष्य (manuṣyá)) or may derive from Proto-Uralic *mënɜ- (to say).
  • The second element, -ër (“man”), retained in ember (“man”) and férj (husband), is cognate with Mari erɣǝ, erɣe (“son, boy”) and Finnish yrkö (man). It is from Proto-Uralic *irkä or *ürkä (man, son, boy).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [ˈmɒɟɒr]
  • (file)
  • Hyphenation: ma‧gyar
