From Proto-Germanic *mangijaną, from Proto-Indo-European *menk- (“knead”). Cognate with Old Frisian menza, Old Saxon mengian, Middle Dutch mengen (Dutch mengen), Old High German mengen (German mengen). The Indo-European root is also the source of Old Church Slavonic мѫка (mǫka), Russian мука (muka), Lithuanian minkiti.
