From Proto-Indo-European *meih₁-ro ‘peace’ (compare Polish mir, Lithuanian mieras), enlargement of *meih₁- ‘soft, mild’ (compare Latin mītis ‘soft (not chewy)’, Polish miły ‘sweet, dear’).
