From Nīla (“Nile river”) + zirgs (“horse”), probably a calque of German Nilpferd, itself ultimately a calque (with Nile instead of river) from Ancient Greek ἱπποπόταμος (hippopótamos) (from ἵππος (híppos, “horse”) + ποταμός (potamós, “river”)).
