From Nīla (Nile river) + zirgs (horse), probably a calque of German Nilpferd, itself ultimately a calque (with Nile instead of river) from Ancient Greek ἱπποπόταμος (hippopótamos) (from ἵππος (híppos, horse) + ποταμός (potamós, river)).
