From Proto-Slavic *ognjь, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *ungnis, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁n̥gʷnis. Cognates include Lithuanian ugnis, Latin ignis, Sanskrit अग्नि (agní) and Hittite 𒀀𒀝𒉌𒅖 (akniš, “name of a deity”).
