From Old Polish koprzywa from Proto-Slavic *kropiva, adideated to po- and krzywy or pokrzywić (cf. Polish placename Koprzywnica, Czech kopřiva, Serbo-Croatian kopriva, Russian крапива (krapiva) (adideated to кропить (kropitʹ) and with akanye fixed in spelling).
