Late Latin borrowing from Ancient Greek προφητίζω (prophētízō), Hellenistic variant of προφητεύω (prophēteúō, “I interpret the gods; I preach inspired by the Holy Spirit”), from προ- (pro-, “before”) + φημί (phēmí, “to declare, assert, say”).
