From Proto-Finnic *repäinen, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *repä, likely a loan from Proto-Indo-Iranian *reupōśo-. Compare Persian روباه (rubâh, “fox”) and Avestan 𐬎𐬭𐬎𐬞𐬌 (urupi, “certain breed of dog”). Cognate of Finnish repo and Veps reboi. See also rebu.
