From Japanese 力車 (rikisha), an abbreviation of 人力車 (jinrikisha), from Middle Chinese 人力 (nyinlik "human power") + 車 (t͡ʃʰæ "cart") (compare Mandarin rénlìchē 人力車). Invented in Japan circa 1869.
