Etymology

From the verb sýna (to show) + -st (a suffix which turns verbs into middle voice verbs). See also the appendix about the Icelandic middle voice verbs.

Verb

sýnast (weak verb, third-person singular past indicative sýndist, supine sýnst)

  1. to pretend, to put on a front
  2. to like, to please
    Ég geri það sem mér sýnist.
    I do as I please.
  3. to seem to one
    Mér sýnist þetta ganga vel.
    To me it seems to be going well.
