From Proto-Germanic *sandijaną, from a causative ablaut-variant of *sinþ-, from Proto-Indo-European *s(w)ent-. Cognate with Old Frisian senda, Old Saxon sendian, Dutch zenden, Old High German sendan (German senden), Old Norse senda (Swedish sända), Gothic 𐍃𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌾𐌰𐌽. The Indo-European root is also the source of Welsh hynt ‘path’, Lithuanian siusti ‘send’.
