szałwia

Polish

Etymology

From Latin salvia, from salvus.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈʂaw.vʲa/
  • (file)

Noun

szałwia f

  1. sage, any plant of the genus Salvia

Declension

Note: etymologically, the declension should follow the pattern for Latinate nouns ending in -ia (see e.g. historia, entalpia), and thus contain geminated i in the genitive, dative, locative and genitive plural. However, the word is highly assimilated, and thus the native feminine declension with single i is also common. Current usage on the Internet seems to favor the geminated i form by around 3:1.
