From Proto-Vietic *tʰəːm (fragrant), perhaps from Proto-Mon-Khmer *dhum ~ *dhuum (fragrant; to scent); compare Khmer ធុំ (thum, fragrant) and Proto-Katuic *pahuum ~ *tahuum (whence Pacoh thum (fragrant)).
