Etymology

From uz- (on, over) + balss (voice) + -enis, i.e., that which is above the balsene (larynx), clearly a calque of New Latin epiglottis, from Ancient Greek ἐπί (epí, upon, over) and γλῶττα, γλῶσσα (glôtta, glôssa, tongue) (with a masculine ending).
