Probably from a Vulgar Latin *virdium (a root), from Latin viridium, or reformed as a singular from the plural veardzã, which is derived from Vulgar Latin *virdia (as Romanian varză). Compare Dalmatian viarz, Friulian verge, Italian verza, Portuguese verça, Romanian varză, Spanish berza.
