Opportunities to Build State Chronic Disease Epidemiology Capacity

Field Assignment Opportunities

CDC’s State Chronic Disease Epidemiology Assignee Program

This program (formerly known as STEPPS) helps states build chronic disease epidemiology capacity by assigning them a chronic disease epidemiologist to assist in the following areas:

  • Data analysis
  • Design of chronic disease epidemiological investigations
  • Evaluation
  • Conducting studies
  • Publishing data findings
  • Other activities targeting chronic disease prevention and health promotion
  • Training mid-level chronic disease epidemiologists in epidemiologic methods and data interpretations

The assignee is a CDC employee, usually a doctorate level epidemiologist, funded through the Direct Assistance (DA) mechanism. Through DA, an epidemiologist is assigned to the state for 2 years or more, depending on the state’s needs and funding availability.

National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD)

The National Association of Chronic Disease Directors is committed to serving the chronic disease program directors of every state and US jurisdiction. Through this program, NACDD provides financial support for 4 years toward a senior-level chronic disease epidemiologist assigned to a state public health department.

National Mentorship Program in Applied Chronic Disease Epidemiology

The National Mentorship Program in Applied Chronic Disease Epidemiology was developed by CDC and NACDD to help address the shortage of technical expertise in chronic disease epidemiology in state public health departments. This program fosters mutually beneficial relationships between experienced and new chronic disease epidemiologists.

Fellowships

CDC/CSTE Applied Epidemiology Fellowship

The Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) works to detect, prevent, and control conditions of public health significance. The CDC/CSTE Applied Epidemiology Fellowship places mid-level epidemiologists in state or local health departments for a 2-year accelerated training experience.

Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS)

The Epidemic Intelligence Service is a unique, 2-year, post-graduate program of service and on-the-job training for health professionals interested in the practice of epidemiology.
