The CDC HPV Vaccination Award

The HPV Vaccine is Cancer Prevention Champion Award is an annual award given jointly by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), American Cancer Society (ACS), and Association of American Cancer Institutes (AACI). This award recognizes clinicians, clinics, practices, groups, and health systems that are effectively working to protect their adolescents against human papilloma (HPV) cancers by achieving high HPV vaccination rates among 11- and 12- year-old patients.

Each year, up to one Champion from each of the 10 U.S. Department of Health and Human Services regions will be selected and recognized.

The first award recipients will be announced in the fall of 2017, featured on the CDC website, receive an HPV Vaccine Is Cancer Prevention Champion plaque, and may be recognized at local or national events led by cancer or pediatric organizations.

Award Criteria

CDC, ACS, and AACI will use the following criteria and considerations to select Champions:

• Adolescent Health: The candidate must be a clinician, clinic, practice, group, or health system that treats adolescents as part of their overall population.
• Vaccination Rates: The candidate must reach target series completion rate of 70% for the patient population aged 13–15 years. The rate must account for both female and male patients. Vaccination under the two—dose schedule (two doses given at least five months apart in children ages 9–14 years) satisfies series completion, as does the original three—dose schedule.[1]
• Population Size: Nominees who are protecting a larger patient[2] population will be weighted heavier.
• Data Sources: The candidate’s AFIX data can be used for nomination. Other data sources can include immunization information systems, electronic health record platforms, quality improvement initiatives, or performance measure systems, but the state or local immunization program must validate data.

² Patient population is defined as patients who have has a clinical encounter in the previous 24 months.
