CDC now recommends 11 to 12 year olds get two doses of HPV vaccine—rather than the previously recommended three doses—to protect against cancers caused by HPV. When is the right time to vaccinate against HPV?
Receiving a recommendation for vaccination from a clinician is the main reason parents choose to vaccinate their children. Avoid missed opportunities by strongly recommending the HPV vaccine to parents of 11- 12 year-olds on the same day and in the same way that you recommend Tdap and meningococcal vaccines. - Recommend HPV vaccination in the same way and on the same day as all adolescent vaccines. You can say, “Now that your child is 11, he/she is due for three vaccines today. These will help protect him/her from the infections that can cause meningitis, HPV cancers, and pertussis.”
- Preparing parents for vaccination by sending parents of 9 and 10 years olds a letter that explains the vaccines routinely recommended for preteens.
