EHSB Collaborates on Lead Exposure Reduction Plan in La Oroya, Peru

In March 2004, the Environmental Health Services Branch collaborated with scientists from the Lead Poisoning Prevention Branch, the Division of Environmental Hazards and Health Effects, and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry to visit La Oroya, Peru. The team assessed conditions that may be contributing to reported health complaints and elevated blood lead levels in the smelter community of La Oroya. La Oroya Lead Smelter

The team prepared this report, Development of an Integrated Intervention Plan to Reduce Exposure to Lead and Other Contaminants in the Mining Center of La Oroya, Peru [PDF - 282 KB] Appendices A-F; H-l [PDF - 598 KB] Appendix G [PDF - 1.1 MB], for the United States Agency for International Development and the Peruvian General Directorate of Environmental Health. The report recommends ways to reduce exposure to lead and other contaminants in La Oroya.
