Dr. F. Selcen Kilinc-Balci has been working for National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for over 5 years in the area of protective clothing and equipment. She received her PhD degree in Polymer and Fiber Engineering from the Auburn University. Before joining NPPTL, she worked as a senior applications research engineer at DuPont Protection Technologies. Her work at DuPont focused on product development, product testing and certification, and promotional claim validation in personal protection. She has more than 15 years of experience in fabric comfort, comfort modeling, textiles testing/evaluation, and protective clothing.

She has authored a Statistics textbook, edited a book in fire resistant textiles, and has published four book chapters, 18 peer-reviewed papers, mainly in the area of in protective clothing, fabric comfort and fabric tactile characterization. She extensively presented her work in national and international conferences. She has filed four patent applications covering research with antimicrobial fibers, slow release drug implants and a fabric handle testing device. She has worked on several projects funded by National Textile Center, NASA, USDA, and US Air Force in a variety of innovative topics in fiber/polymer science. She received "AATCC Research Award" in 2004 and "TAPPI-INDA 2007 International Nonwovens Technical Conference Best Paper and Presentation Award" in 2008. She is an active technical committee member of Association for the Advancement for Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), American Society for Testing and Materials International (ASTM), American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC), and Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI). She is also an area editor of Journal of Engineered Fibers and Fabrics.
