Wildfires in Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Public Health Preparedness Saves Lives in Tennessee Train Fire
In 2015, a chemical fire from a train derailment exposed thousands of Tennesseans to deadly fumes. Public health training, personnel, and partnerships—all supported through PHEP funding— ensured that trained staff, a communication system for responders, and decontamination equipment were in place for the response. As a result, there were no serious injuries and zero lives lost.
