Question: If a person has been vaccinated with the 4-valent HPV vaccine can the 9-valent HPV vaccine be administered?

The CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has issued “Supplemental information and guidance for vaccination providers regarding use of 9-valent HPV vaccine,” which includes guidance on the transition between 4-valent and 9-valent HPV vaccines. It clearly states that 9-valent HPV vaccine may be used to continue or complete a series started with a different HPV vaccine product, such as 4-valent or 2-valent vaccine. However, for persons who have completed a 3-dose series of either 4-valent or 2-valent HPV vaccine, routine additional vaccination with 9-valent HPV vaccine is not recommended. To formulate these recommendations, ACIP took into account available evidence on both the epidemiology of diseases preventable with each of the different formulations, and the safety and immunogenicity when different formulations are used as part of an HPV vaccine series. More detail on the evidence base, rationale, and recommendations is available at www.cdc.gov/vaccines/hcp/acip-recs/vacc-specific/hpv.html.
