Sodium ferric gluconate, sold under the brand name Ferrlecit, is a medication use to treat iron deficiency anemia in people on hemodialysis who are receiving epoetin therapy.[2] It is given by injection into a vein.[2] In this group intravenous iron has been found to be better than iron by mouth.[1]
Common side effects in adults include nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, shortness of breath, chest pain, leg cramps, and pain.[2] In children the most common side effects are headache, fast heart rate, and vomiting.[2] Other side effects may include low blood pressure and allergic reactions.[2] It is a type of iron supplement.[1]
Sodium ferric gluconate was approved for medical use in the United States in 1999.[2] In the United States it costs about 68 USD per dose as of 2021.[4] It is also available in Europe.[5]
