How to Buy a Stackable Washer and Dryer

Stackable washer and dryer sets are especially popular to people who have limited space in their home. They often fit inside of a closet, and with the new technology being used, they are as efficient with energy as they are with space. If you live in an apartment or a condominium, where there is no dedicated laundry room, or a house without a basement where you can keep a full size washer and dryer, a stackable laundry combination may help. Buy a stackable washer and dryer unit that is safe, user-friendly and able to fit your space and budget.

Measure the space you have. Use a tape measure to get the length and the width of the space where you will keep your stackable washer and dryer, to make sure you buy one that fits. Most models are from 24 to 27 inches (61 to 68.6 cm) wide, and from 70 to 75 inches (177.8 to 190.5 cm) high.

Look for units labeled as stackable. Any compact washer and dryer can be purchased separately and stacked on top of one another, but that may not be safe. Make sure you select a model that is labeled as stackable. Washers are typically on the bottom of the unit, with dryers on the top.

Practice opening and reaching into the dryer to make sure loading and unloading laundry will be easy. Only if it's attached to the plumbing, or it won't do anything useful. Some places do require them, I don't know why and I never had any washer in my life let loose. They're a good idea, but must be properly installed to save anything from damage.

Warnings

Some smaller units will not allow you to run the washer and the dryer at the same time. Be sure to ask about their capacity before you buy.
