Calling someone in Vietnam from another country can be a tricky, expensive process. Luckily, if you have all of the right codes, it can be a lot easier. If calling through the phone, dial your country's exit code, followed by 8-4 and the mobile or landline number of the person you're calling. If you have access to Wi-Fi and have a Wi-Fi capable device, you can save money and effort by calling through an app.
Steps
Calling on the Phone
-
1Dial your country's exit code. When you want to call someone in Vietnam and you're in a different country, the first thing you'll need to do is dial your country's exit code in order to get the call out of your country. These vary from country to country but many are 0-0 or 0-1-1. For example, the exit code for the United States is 0-1-1.[1]
-
2Enter 8-4 to connect to Vietnam. After dialing the exit code, you'll need to dial Vietnam's country code. Press the digit 8 and then the digit 4 to get the call into Vietnam.[2]Advertisement

3Press 9 and then the mobile number to call a cell phone. If you're trying to connect with a cell phone in Vietnam, you'll need to dial 9 followed by the service provider number and the 8-digit mobile number. The first digit you'll dial after 9 depends on the cellular provider of the phone you're trying to reach.[3]
- For example, you'll dial 9-1 to reach a mobile phone that is serviced by Vinaphone.
-
4Dial the city code and the local number to call a landline. After dialing 8-4, you'll need to enter the code for the city you're trying to reach, which will either be 2, or 3 digits, starting with digit 2. After this, dial the 7-digit local landline number. Some examples of Vietnam city codes include:[4]
- Ho Chi Minh: 28
- An Giang: 296
- Bac Can: 209
-
5Reach emergency services by dialing 1-1-3, 1-1-4, or 1-1-5. If you need to contact emergency services to report a crime, fire, or medical emergency, dial the appropriate 3 digits after dialing the country code.[5]
- Press 1-1-3 to contact the police.
- Press 1-1-4 to get fire fighting services.
- Press 1-1-5 for emergency medical assistance.
Using Apps
-
1Get connected to Wi-Fi. Before calling, you'll need to get a device that has Wi-Fi capabilities, such as an iPhone. Take the device to a location that has an accessible Wi-Fi network and type in the password if one is needed.[6] Hostels, hotels, and internet cafes are a few good places to try.
-
2Try calling through Skype. Skype allows you to call or message fellow Skype users for free on computers, tablets, and smartphones. Ask for the Skype name of the person you're trying to reach, or try to find them by typing their full name, email, or phone number into the search bar. Then add them as a contact by pressing the green circle icon that has a plus sign. When you're ready to call, either press the blue icon with the picture of a video camera or the blue icon with the picture of a telephone.[7]
- For a small fee, you can also call landlines from your Skype account.
-
3FaceTime someone in Vietnam. If you're calling from an Apple device and the person who you're contacting has an Apple device, consider calling them via FaceTime. FaceTime is a free Apple video calling service. Go to your settings and click FaceTime to ensure that it's turned on, and then pull up the contact you want to call. Click on the telephone icon that's next to the word “FaceTime” instead of the one that's next to the word “mobile.”[8]
-
4Use the calling feature in Facebook Messenger. If both you and the person you wish to call have Facebook accounts, sign into Facebook, download Facebook's free Messenger app, and open the app. Then type in the person's name and tap the phone icon in the upper righthand corner to call them.[9]
-
5Call with WhatsApp. Whatsapp is a calling app owned by Facebook that's free and commonly used for international calling. Download the app and then press the phone icon on the contact page on the top right hand corner to start the call.[10]
