What people like to call color "nude" does not always match everyone's skin tone. Often if the garment you are wearing has mesh, is a light color, sheer or is a thin fabric you may wish to have your underwear match your skin tone for esthetic and fashion reasons. There are several ways to dye your underwear so it will match your skin tone.

Method 1
Method 1 of 2:

Using a Commercial Dye Product

  1. 1
Take a picture of the area of your body you wish to match.  If you tan in the sun, you may wish to take a different picture at a different time and make two separate dye batches.
  2. 2
Purchase the dye.  Most brands offer a range of colors from Tan to Chocolate Brown.

  3. 3
Follow the instructions on the package.  Some dye products only work in hot water and others work with cold water.  It is important to know if your fabric is colorfast and whether or not it will shrink in hot water.  If so, then make sure you use a cold water dye.
  4. 4
Tape or pin up your picture near your dyeing container.  Mix the dye and water.  Stir until the dye is dissolved and mixed thoroughly.  Place the item in the dye bath.  Stir until completely saturated.  Check in 5 minute intervals until the item is slightly darker than the picture.  Remove and rinse and then hang to dry.
  5. 5
Remember that dye can permanently stain some surfaces, so avoid dying in a ceramic or porcelain sink.  A plastic bucket or tub is very effective for dying most articles of clothing.  Make sure you use rubber gloves so you don't dye your skin.
  6. 6
If the item is not dark enough, place it back into the dye bath and repeat the steps until it is the desired color.

Method 2
Method 2 of 2:

Using Coffee or Tea

  • Another way to dye fabric is to use coffee or black tea (most usual type)  to dye your item.  This often gives you more flexibility in determining the color because as your tea steeps, the color darkens and you can choose when to remove the fabric when it is the desired color.
  1. 1
Use hot water. When you use coffee or tea, it is most effective with items that can be placed in hot water.  It takes longer to dye items in cold coffee or tea.
  2. 2
Tape or pin up your picture near your dyeing container.  Pour the coffee or tea into the container.  For tea place the tea bags in hot water in the container and stir. Place the item in the dye bath.  Stir until completely saturated.  Check in 5 minute intervals until the item is slightly darker than the picture.  Remove and rinse and then hang to dry.

Warnings

  • Do not wash any dyed items with other clothing as the dye will run in the wash and ruin your clothes. Wash all dyed items separately
