You will also need to learn how to turn a negative into a positive so that your interviewer will look right past your previous termination.

This means if you were fired for misconduct, you need to own up to it instead of saying you resigned.
    • It's also important to address the question at hand. Trying to dodge it by changing the subject will only make you seem suspicious.

Just talk about the lessons you have learned in a subtle and positive manner, never berating yourself to show false modesty. You should be selling yourself, not selling yourself short.

Minimizing the Importance of the Termination

It would be better to be transparent rather than keep the dirt under the rug -- you would be in a bigger hole when you eventually get employed and you lied about the reason for your previous termination. When you admit and come clean, ask for an opportunity to prove yourself and apply the lessons you learned from the mistake.
