How to Get the "Cut" HM in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen

This wikiHow teaches you how to obtain an HM that allows you to cut down trees that are in your way. You can obtain this HM in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen versions.

Things You Should Know

Travel to the Cerulean City and defeat the 5 trainers and their leader so you can cross the Nugget Bridge.
Head north until you reach the big house. Stand in front of the computer and select it to receive the boarding pass to the S.S. Anne in Vermilion City.
Go back to Cerulean City and travel through the Underground Tunnel to Vermilion City.
Head to the boat walkway and show your boarding pass to the guard. Then, go upstairs, find the captain, and rub his back to get the "Cut" HM.

Part 1

Part 1 of 4:

Exiting Cerulean City

Meet the prerequisites. You receive the "Cut" HM from the captain of the S.S. Anne in Vermilion City, so you must first travel to Cerulean City before you can begin.

Go all the way up to the Nugget Bridge. This bridge is near the top of Cerulean City.

Defeat the five trainers and their leader. Before you can cross the bridge, you'll need to defeat the five trainers here, as well as defeat their leader.

Receive safe passage. Once you've defeated all six of the enemies, you can cross the bridge.
- If you have any healing potions, make sure that you heal up your pokémon before proceeding.

Cross Nugget Bridge. This will take you north of Cerulean City.

Part 2 of 4:

Getting the S.S. Anne Boarding Pass

Head north until the map ends. Once you can't go up any further, you can proceed to the next step.

Head east. Take a sharp right and continue until you're stopped by a trainer.

Battle any trainers between you and the big house. You'll need to defeat several trainers between you and the largest house in town.^{[1]

Enter the house. Once you arrive at the largest house in town, head inside. You should see a pokémon in the middle of the room.

Talk to the pokémon inside the house. This will give you permission to use the computer in the corner.

Use the computer. Stand in front of the computer, select it, and wait for the pokémon to turn back into a human being.
- You may need to select a computer option in order to trigger this event.

Receive the S.S. Anne pass. Once the pokémon changes into a human named Bill, he will reward you with the boarding pass to the S.S. Anne in Vermilion City.

Part 3 of 4:

Unlocking Vermilion City

Go back to Cerulean City. Head west from the large house, then head south to cross back over Nugget Bridge. This will take you back into Cerulean City.

Beat Misty's gym. Go to Misty's water gym and battle her. Once you complete this task, Vermilion City will unlock.
- Since Misty's gym is a Water-type environment, using a Grass- or Electric-type pokémon is recommended.

Go to the house that had a cop in front of it. This house is to the east of Misty's gym. You'll notice that this house now has no one in front of it.

Navigate to the Underground Tunnel entrance. Head through the house, then head to the south-east until you arrive at the Underground Tunnel house.

Go through the tunnel. Head down into the house to do so. You'll emerge on the other side, straight into Vermilion City.

Part 4 of 4:

Getting the "Cut" HM

Head over to the boat walkway. You'll find this section toward the south end of Vermilion City. A guard will stop you if you try to walk onto the walkway.

Show your pass to the guard. Press A to do so. The guard will allow you on-board at this point.

Defeat any trainers and your rival. Board the boat and make your way through it, battling anyone you encounter when prompted. You'll ultimately run into your rival here; after defeating him, you'll be able to continue along to find the captain.

Find the captain. Head up the stairs behind your rival to enter the captain's quarters. You'll find him next to a bucket.

Rub the captain's back. Walk up to the captain and press A to do so.

Receive the "Cut" HM. Once the back rub is complete, the captain will reward you with the "Cut" HM. You can now use it with your preferred pokémon.

Apply the "Cut" HM to a pokémon. Once you've allowed one of your pokémon to learn the "Cut" HM, you'll be able to cut down path-blocking trees throughout the world by selecting the pokémon and using it on the tree(s).

You can trade for them, or complete the game and follow the quests to obtain the Legendary. More often than not, there will be sightings of accompanying Legendary.

How do I teach my Pokemon cut after getting the HM?

You go to your bag, open the TMs/HMs pocket, and find the Cut HM. Activate it by pressing A, then choose the Pokemon you want to teach Cut. Note that not every Pokemon can learn it, and if you want to delete it later, you'll have to visit the Move Deleter in Fuchsia City.

Warnings

Make sure that you have plenty of healing potions on-hand. You'll end up battling quite a few trainers between entering Cerulean City and receiving the "Cut" HM.
