Figuring out the best way to store ties can be difficult, especially if you have a lot of them. Hanging them up is a great way to get rid of wrinkles and store a lot of ties in a small space. You can add a hanging rack to your closet or use hangers that you already have to keep your ties looking great when you aren’t wearing them.
Steps
Using Hangers and Racks
-
1Use a tie rack for a convenient option. Purchase a tie rack online or from a home goods store and hang it from your closet rod. Drape a tie on each hook of the rack and let them hang.[1]
- You can also purchase a rack that mounts directly to the wall. These require installation with a drill and screws and are great for walk-in closets.
-
2Hang ties on a hanger for an easy solution. Use a hanger that has a connecting piece at the bottom. Place your tie carefully over the bottom of the hanger so that it is centered and won’t fall off. Add all of your ties onto the hanger in one layer.[2]
Tip: Use a velvet hanger made specifically for storing ties if you are worried about them sliding around in your closet.

3Set up a towel rack for more storage. If you have a lot of ties, you may need more surface area to lay them out on. Place a tiered towel rack in your closet and drape your ties over each tier to keep them organized and secure.[3]
- You can find small towel racks at most home goods stores.
-
4Add shower curtain rings to a hanger for a cheap option. Hook 10 to 15 shower rings around the bottom part of a hanger. Hang each tie on one shower ring and let them hang freely without touching the bottom of your closet.[4]
- You can find plastic shower rings at most home goods stores for around $1 per package.
Preventing Wrinkles and Damage
-
1Unknot your tie before taking it off. Gently pull your tie from side to side to loosen the knot. Pull out the long end of the tie from your knot. Unravel the entire knot gently to preserve the integrity of your tie.[5]
Tip: Taking off your tie the right way will make it last a lot longer and prevent wrinkles over time.
-
2Avoid placing your ties on top of each other to prevent wrinkles. The weight of one tie on top of another can make the crease from your hanger or tie rack much more prominent. Try to keep your ties separate from each other when you hang them up.[6]
- If you do need to stack your ties on top of each other, try to rotate out which ones are on the bottom every week or so.
-
3Put the rack or hanger in the middle of your closet rod. Make sure your ties are in the middle of your closet rod away from other clothes. This will keep them flat and wrinkle-free.[7]
- If you don’t have room to put your hanger in the middle of your closet, try hanging it next to the wall of your closet to keep your ties flat.
-
4Cover the tie rack or hanger with a garment bag to prevent dust. If you are planning on storing your ties for a long time, cover your tie rack with a small plastic garment bag that zips up. This will stop dust and debris from covering your ties as they are stored.[8]
- You can find small garment bags at most home goods stores.
