The process for making whole wheat pasta is the same for making any other type of pasta, but the health benefits are greater. Whole wheat is high in fiber, and when eaten as a regular part of a diet, can lower cholesterol levels, reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes and obesity. Whole grain pasta also provides a slightly nuttier taste than pastas made from the typical durum or semolina flour. Here are a few steps on how to make whole wheat pasta.
Ingredients
- 2 1/3 cups (529.6 g) whole wheat flour
- 1/2 tsp. (2 g) sea salt
- 2 eggs, beaten
- 1/3 cup (75.6 ml) water
- 1 tsp. (5 ml) olive oil
Steps
Preparing the Pasta Dough
-
1Place 2 1/3 cups (529.6 g) of whole wheat flour into a large mixing bowl.
-
2Add 1/2 tsp. (2 g) of sea salt to the flour and mix the 2 ingredients together to blend them.Advertisement
-
3Create a well in the middle of the mixture in the bowl.
-
4Beat 2 eggs in a small bowl with a fork, and then add the beaten eggs to the center of the well in the large bowl.
-
5Add 1/3 cup (75.6 ml) of water and 1 tsp. (5 ml) of olive oil to the eggs.
-
6Use your hands to combine the wet and dry ingredients gradually until they are combined and begin to form a ball of dough.
-
7Remove the dough from the bowl onto a well-floured, flat surface.
-
8Knead the dough to fully combine the ingredients and make it smoother.
-
9Place the ball of dough back into a large mixing bowl, cover it with a kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let it sit for 12 to 24 hours.
Making the Pasta Noodles
-
1Spread flour heavily over a flat surface once the dough has been sitting for 12 to 24 hours.
-
2Remove the dough from the bowl and roll it out with a well-floured rolling pin until it is approximately 1/8 in. (0.3cm) thick.
-
3Use a pizza cutter or a kitchen knife to cut out long, thin strips of dough.
Cooking the Pasta
-
1Put a large pot of water over high heat on the stove and allow it to come to a rapid boil.
-
2Insert the fresh pasta noodles into the pot when the water is boiling, and allow them to cook for about 4 to 5 minutes.
-
3Drain the pasta and rinse with cold water to prevent them from becoming sticky.
-
4Finished.
