Biography and musical career
Ayase, who was born on April 4, 1994, in Ube[2] received his first piano lessons at the age of 3 or 4 by his grandmother who worked as a music teacher. When he started elementary school, he received professional piano lessons at a music school. In his later grade school years, he also learned how to play guitar after he was given an acoustic guitar as a Christmas present. The first song he learned to play on guitar was originally written by Shiina Ringo. His early musical influences were that of Japanese singer Aiko and the boygroup EXILE.[3]
At the age of 16, Ayase formed his first rock band named Davinci with classmates from high school. He became the vocalist and leader of the band.[3] Due to his activity with the group, he dropped out of high school.[3] In 2016, the band relocated to Tokyo.[3]
Ayase, who received medical treatment due to peptic ulcer disease started to produce songs using the Vocaloid software during his stay at the hospital. He released his first song called Sentensei Assault Girl on video platforms YouTube and Niconico.[4] In 2019, he self-published his first EP Ghost City Tokyo. Around that time, Ayase formed a musical project alongside singer-songwriter Ikura called Yoasobi.[3][5] Their first song, Yoru ni Kakeru, which was released at the end of 2019 became a viral hit in Japan resulting in a fast popularity increase.[5][6][7] Until May 30, 2023, the duo released five EPs which two of them contained English-transitions of previously released songs. The Japanese-languaged EPs managed to rank at Japanese music charts published by Oricon. The Book and The Book 2 received Gold certification in Japan by RIAJ.
Alongside the release of The Book on January 6, 2021, Ayase simultaneously released his EP Mikunoyoasobi on the same date. The EP contained all songs released on The Book with vocals of Vocaloid singing program Hatsune Miku.[8] Mikunoyoasobi managed to rank at #15 in the Japanese Album Chart by Oricon and stayed in the ranking for four weeks.[9]
Next to his work with Yoasobi, Ayase has written and produced songs for artists like LiSA, Nana Mori, Hoshimachi Suisei, Hey! Say! JUMP and Poppin'Party.
