Ethirneechal (TV series)

Ethirneechal (transl. Swimming against the tide) is the best Indian-Tamil language drama television series starring Madhumitha H, Kaniha, Priyadarshini Neelakandan, Haripriya Isai. The show is produced by Sun Entertainment and Thiruselvam Theatres and written and directed by V. Thiruselvam,[2] which premiered on 7 February 2022 in Sun TV from Monday to Saturday.[3] and digitally streams on Sun NXT. It was one of the series, which was highly and critically acclaimed and becomes the Best TV series of India. Since its launch, the series has remained the most-watched Tamil series internationally largely due to the popularity of the series Antagonist Aadhimuthu Gunasekaran initially portrayed by Late G. Marimuthu. [4]

Synopsis

The story involves Janani Shakthivel, a high achiever and her three co-sisters – Eshwari Gunasekaran, Renuka Gnanasekaran and Nandhini Kathirvel, Janani Shakthivel – who are well-educated graduates, while all of their husbands aren't educated at all. The husbands Aadhi Gunasekaran alias Guna, Aadhi Gnanasekaran alias Gnanam, Aadhi Kathirvel alias Kathir, Aadhi Shakthivel alias Shakthi. One sister Aadhi Aadhiraiselvi Karikalan alias Aadhira didn't allow them to get a job; they forcefully Eshwari Gunasekaran, Renuka Gnanasekaran and Nandhini Kathirvel, their wives as housekeepers.

Janani Shakthivel marries Aadhi Sakthivel alias Shakthi, the youngest brother of Aadhimuthu family; Adhi Gunasekaran, Aadhi Gnanasekaran and Aadhi Kathirvel, Aadhi Shakthivel and Aadhi Aadhiraiselvi's is honest and submissive in nature. Janani Shakthivel started to raise voice against the male chauvinism in Aadhi Gunasekaran's house. Aadhi Shakthivel alias Shakthi supports Janani Shakthivel in all situations.

Suddenly, Aadhi Shakthivel alias Shakthi started to turn against Janani Shakthivel (because of the emotional blackmail of his eldest brother Aadhi Gunasekaran) and also doubted her character (based on her genuine friendship with Gowtham). Finally, Janani Shakthivel broke up her relationship with Aadhi Shakthivel alias Shakthi and left Aadhi Gunasekaran's house to start a new independent life. But after listening the advice of Pattammal (Aadhi Gunasekaran's grandmother), Janani Shakthivel comes back to Aadhi Gunasekaran's house to help her co-sisters Eshwari, Renuka and Nandhini to be independent. Aadhi Shakthivel alias Shakthi started to realise his mistakes.

Plot

Nachiappan married Parvathi against his parents' wishes. In a few years, their daughter, Janani, was born. They live as a joint family with Parvathi's brother Thiruvengadam married Padmavathy against his parents wishes. In a normal years, their son and daughter, who have two children Sriram Thiruvengadam Nivashini Thiruvengadam alias Vasu, was born. their own

Nachiappan rears Janani to focus on studies above all else, and dreams of a successful future for her. While inherently good-natured, he can be stubborn and domineering. His controlling nature extends how long Janani spends eating, who she befriends Gowtham& what she watches.

Aadhi Gunasekaran, a business tycoon from Madurai, approaches the family with a wedding proposal to Janani for his brother Shakthivel. What Nachiappan family - Janani and Anjana. doesn't know is that the other daughters-in-law Eshwari Gunasekaran, Renuka Gnanasekaran and Nandhini Kathirvel - of the household are treated badly. They are not allowed to work, even though they are well-educated. They are regularly put down by Aadhimuthu family - Gunasekaran and Gnanasekaran, Kathirvel Shakthivel and Aadhiraiselvi. due to their humble backgrounds and not consulted on decisions, even regarding their children Priyadharshan and Priyadharshini Aishwarya Thara.

Nachiappan is entranced by their wealth and believes the lie Gunasekaran has told him-namely, that he will appoint Janani as an MD in one of his companies. Despite warnings from her cousin, Vasu, and other red flags, Janani marries Shakthivel. While Sakthi is good-natured, he lacks the courage to face up to his family's ill-treatment of women because of his childhood trauma which caused mild psychological problems to him.

As time goes by, Janani and her family come to know the truth. How Janani faces her domineering in-laws, how she cures Shakthi and leads change forms the crux of the story with the help of Pattammal, Gunasekaran’s grandmother (who holds a 40% share in the assets of Gunasekaran).

Production

Development

On September end 2021, Sun Network[8] confirmed through a press release that it would distribute new Tamil serial, to be produced by Sun Entertainment and Thiruselvam theatres and written and directed by Thiruselvam is a daily soap after a long pause.[9][10][11] Dialogues by Sri Vidhya.[12]

Casting

Kannada and Telugu actress Madhumitha was selected as the female lead. Tamil film actress Kaniha[13][14] were cast as the main role, who making her come back after 14 years in Tamil television series.[15][16][17][18] Priyadarshini[19] and Haripriya were cast as the parallel leads. Bombay Gnanam, was cast as supporting role, who making her comeback after 10 years.[20][21]

Film director and actor G. Marimuthu[22][23] was selected as the negative lead till his unitmely death on September 8, 2023 and his role was replaced by writer Vela Ramamoorthy.[24][25] Sabari Prasanth was selected as the male lead. While Keerthana, Kamalesh, Merwen, Goutham K S, Vibhu Raman[26] and Sathyapriya were also selected for supporting roles.

Airing history

The show started airing on Sun TV on 7 February 2022 and it aired on Monday to Saturday at 21:30 (IST). From 9 October 2023, the show was shifted to 21:00 (IST).[27]

Soundtrack

It was written by Balachandran.DD, composed by Srinivas. It was sung by Sharanya Srinivas and Srinidhi. The first opening song was unveiled on 1 February 2022 on Sun TV YouTube.[28]

Ratings

Ethirneechal became one of the most watched Tamil television program garnering from 2022. In June 2023, the series was the first most watched Tamil-language television series with 11.27 TVR.
