Hidden Voices (game show)

Hidden Voices (Vietnamese: Giọng ải giọng ai, abbreviated GAGA) is a Vietnamese television mystery music game show series, having formally recognised as part of I Can See Your Voice franchise.[1][2] Since its premiere on 5 November 2016,[3][4] it has aired five seasons on HTV7.

Gameplay

Format

Presented with a group of "mystery singers" identified only by their occupation, two opposing guest artists must attempt to eliminate bad singers from the group without ever hearing them sing, assisted by clues and a celebrity panel over the course of several rounds. At the end of the game, the last remaining mystery singers are revealed each as either good or bad by means of a duet between them and one of the guest artists.[lower-alpha 1]

Under the battle format, both opponents can eliminate one singer each in the first two rounds, and then both can choose one singer each to join the final performance in the third round. At the end of the game, the conditions for mystery singers chosen by opposing guest artists depending on the outcome of a final performance, if:

  1. One guest artist has chosen a "good singer" and the other one has chosen a "bad singer"; or
  2. Both two guest artists have chosen a "good singer" or a "bad singer".

Rewards
  • If one guest artist has a good singer, he/she wins ₫50,000,000. In case of a tie (as both opponents have good singers), the same amount becomes split in half, leaving with ₫25,000,000 each. Both winning singers, regardless of being good or bad, receive ₫10,000,000 each.
  • For the fifth season, the eliminated good singer gets a consolation prize of ₫2,000,000.

  • Visual round

The guest artist is given some time to observe and examine each mystery singer based on their appearance. Afterward, a muted video of each mystery singer that reveals only 0.3 seconds of their singing voice is played as an additional hint.[lower-alpha 2][lower-alpha 3][lower-alpha 4][lower-alpha 5][lower-alpha 6]

  • Lip sync round

Each mystery singer performs a lip sync to a song. Good singers mime to a recording of their own performance, while bad singers mime to a recording by someone else.[lower-alpha 2][lower-alpha 3][lower-alpha 4][lower-alpha 5][lower-alpha 6]

  • Interrogation round

The guest artist may ask questions to the remaining mystery singers. Good singers are required to give truthful responses, while the bad singers must lie.[lower-alpha 2][lower-alpha 4][lower-alpha 5][lower-alpha 6]

  • Talent round

The guest artist must describe one of the mystery singer's other talents, except "singing" itself. It may unrelated to the stage of truth, but it depends on their identity.[lower-alpha 3]

Background

Production and development

In October 2015, VTV has initially made an interest to adapt I Can See Your Voice,[7] which would later commence its development in March 2016.[8] Then in July 2016, HTV formally acquired the rights to produce a Vietnamese counterpart of that said show.[9] Cát Tiên Sa has supposed to produce the show, which would then take over by Điền Quân Media, Color Entertainment and Pixel Factory;[7] the staff team is managed by producer Trần Thế Khương and director Khương Dừa.[10]

Naming and gameplay reformat

As the formal title of Giọng ải giọng ai and its English subtitle Hidden Voices,[3] it became part of the latter franchise.[1][2] With its gameplay based on South Korean programme I Can See Your Voice, it was ruled under the modified "battle format",[5][6] which would later implement to existing ICSYV counterparts such as Indonesia,[11][12] Thailand,[13] and Mexico (that is only applied to two opposing contestants).[14]

Filming

Tapings for the programme took place at the Pixel Factory Studios in Gò Vấp, Ho Chi Minh City.

According to a statement with director Khương Dừa on 5 April 2020, the series has initially planned to temporarily suspend broadcasts for an upcoming fifth season due to the COVID-19 pandemic with a possibility of discontinuation, which he later decided to reverse its plans and commence "digital auditions" anyway.[15][16]

Broadcast history

Hidden Voices debuted on 5 November 2016.[3][4] The linear television airings for the fourth season[17] premiering on 27 July 2019[18] has an initial finale date on 2 November 2019,[19] which would then further extend by releasing 11 unaired episodes[20] until the formal conclusion on 18 January 2020.[21] Despite its planned cancellation because of the COVID-19 pandemic,[15][16] the fifth season premiered on 28 June 2020.[22][23]

Special episodes

Trang Pháp defeated Hồ Việt Trung in the kids special (for the fourth season) on 4 January 2020,[24] while Vũ Cát Tường also defeated Tóc Tiên in the celebrity special (for the fifth season) on 26 July 2020.[25]

Cast

The series employs a panel of celebrities who assist the guest artist(s) to decipher mystery singers' evidences throughout the game. Alongside main and additional cast, guest panelists also appear since the first season. Overall, 4 different members have been assigned, with the original lineup being Trấn Thành and Trường Giang, who became co-hosts since the third season. Also as part of that lineup, Ốc Thanh Vân and Thu Trang appointed their duties until the second season.
