In 2021, it handled 5,549,600 passengers, and in 2022, the number rose to 7,019,300, with 63% of them travelling to or from international destinations.[2] All the major U.S. and Canadian air carriers offer flights to and from Los Cabos to all or most of their primary and secondary hubs. Additionally, it serves as a focus city for Viva Aerobus.

History

The airport has undergone various renovations. The architect of Los Cabos International Airport's 1997 renovation and expansion was Mexican architect Manuel De Santiago-de Borbón González Bravo.[3] The control tower was upgraded with state-of-the-art technology in 2002 when Los Cabos hosted the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum. Additionally, a new highway was created to provide relief to tourists arriving at the airport and wanting to go directly to the touristic zone. In September 2011, the airport briefly offered non-stop flights to Shanghai, China.

In 2014, Hurricane Odile caused significant damage to the airport facilities, leading to a temporary suspension of operations for 18 days.[4] It reopened on October 3, 2014. Starting in April 2018, renovations began in the departure area of Terminal 2, with an estimated completion date in 2020.

Because of a dramatic increase in the number of holiday resorts and due to the region's fast population growth, the infrastructure of the airport is now insufficient compared to the increasing demand, causing a lack of available positions for aircraft during peak hours, as in many other airports in Mexico.

In November 2019, British carrier TUI Airways initiated flights to and from London Gatwick Airport, becoming the first European carrier to serve the Los Cabos area. In 2023, Spain's carrier Iberojet introduced daily direct and connecting flights to Los Cabos from Madrid and Barcelona.
