Nebula (streaming service)

Dave Wiskus and various creators established Standard as an alternative to multi-channel networks. It functions as a management and marketing agency owned by the creators themselves, assisting members in managing the business aspects of being part of the creator economy. [1] The idea for Nebula originated from discussions within the Standard creator community, both online and at VidCon. Nebula officially launched on 23 May 2019, with approximately 75 creators.[2] Since its inception, Nebula has experienced significant growth, attracting over 175 creators who collectively have more than 120 million YouTube subscribers.[3] As of May 2022, Nebula has accumulated over 500,000 subscribers,[5] establishing itself as one of the most successful platforms competing with YouTube.[6] Currently, Nebula stands as the largest creator-owned streaming platform on the internet.[7] The service received nominations for the "Best Influencer Campaign" in the 10th Annual Streamy Awards.[8], "Best Creator Product" in the 11th Annual Streamy Awards,[9] and "Best influencer Campaign" in the 12th Annual Streamy Awards.[10] In September 2021, Curiosity Stream acquired a minority share of Nebula, valuing the company at over $50 million. Nebula also collaborated with Curiosity Stream to promote a bundle subscription for both services.[3] Additionally, in May 2022, Nebula Classes commenced hosting content creators' paid online courses.[5] Furthermore, in October 2022, Nebula announced the launch of an official program allowing creators to release their videos on Nebula prior to YouTube.[11]

As of April 2023, Nebula features over 175 creators and channels. While most of the content is also available on YouTube or podcast platforms, Nebula Originals, produced by one or more creators exclusively for the platform, are also available.[1] The majority of creators have original content, solely on Nebula, and unlike the same videos on YouTube, most of the content on Nebula is sponsorship-free, with no advertisements.[4] Standard, Nebula's parent company, has established Standard Studios, an in-house production company that assists creators with production, editing, and graphics for both Nebula Originals and videos available on Nebula and other platforms that are also hosted both on Nebula and elsewhere.[12] The streaming service is promoted through content creators promoting the site on their other platforms, as Nebula does not advertise elsewhere nor have any publicists on staff.[13][14]

Nebula's video content library is categorized in these categories: Animation, Explainers, Film & TV, Gaming, History, Music, Originals, Science & Engineering, Technology, and Writing. Some of its notable creators include Jordan Harrod, Hbomberguy, Lindsay Ellis, LegalEagle, MinutePhysics, Extra Credits, Adam Neely, Johnny Harris, Rene Ritchie, Not Just Bikes, RealLifeLore, Real Engineering, and Wendover Productions. Many of these creators are also some of the top Patreon earners.[15] Nebula also doubles as a podcast platform with various audio podcasts, mostly by the same creators as its video content. Nebula is accessible through multiple platforms, including computers, smartphones, tablets, or other smart devices via a modern web browser, or their iOS, Apple TV, Roku, Fire TV, Android TV and Android apps. Other device apps are being actively developed but not yet available.[14]
