Name

Bryconops (Creatochanes) Günther, 1864

  • Type species: Salmo melanurus Bloch, 1794

Etymology: etymology not explained, presumably kreas (= flesh or meat); chanos (= gape or open mouth), perhaps referring to toothless (i.e., fleshy) maxillary (“maxillary without teeth”) of B. affinis and B. melanurus (although at least one other publication says their maxillae are indeed toothed).
