  • Rhaponticum Vaill., Königl. Akad. Wiss. Paris Anat. Abh. 5: 177. (1754) nom. inval. Steinwehr, W.B.A. von (transl.), 1754–1760. Königl. Akad. Wiss. Paris Anat. Abh., vols. 5-7: suppressed work for Genera and species names. See Brummitt (2008) no decision.

Note: Govaerts et al. (2022) maintain that Rhaponticum Ludw. (1757) is a synonym of Centaurea L. (1753) and most segregated combinations are best treated as species of Leuzea DC. (1805), but Hassler (2022) takes a contrary view. The problem arises due to the lack of consensus relating to the validity of Rhaponticum Vaill. (1754) used by Greuter (2003 & 2005) when defining his segregates, as reported here in Hidalgo et al. (2006). See Hind (2019) for further discussion, which also recommends that Leuzea DC. (1805) has the greatest taxonomic legitimacy at present. This is a taxonomic opinion and WS can not take sides.
