From Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰeym-. Cognate with Ancient Greek χιών (khiṓn, snow), Latin hiems, Sanskrit हिम (himá), Old Church Slavonic зима (zima), Hittite 𒄀𒈠𒀭 (giman).
