Etymology 1
From Proto-Slavic *volsъ. Doublet of влас (vlas), a borrowing from Old Church Slavonic.
Cognates with Old Persian (vars), Persian گرس (gurs, “curled hair”), Kurdish pirç (“hair”) and Lithuanian valaĩ, Sanskrit वल्श (válśa, “twig, sprout). Akin to Old Armenian վարս (vars), an Iranian borrowing.
