From Proto-Slavic [Term?] (compare Slovene živeti, Bulgarian живе́я (živéja), Old Church Slavonic жити (žiti)), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷeih₃w- (“to live”). Cognate to Lithuanian gyventi, Sanskrit जीवति (jīvati), Latin vīvō.
