Etymology
According to Martirosyan, borrowed from Iranian *bōr- (“brown, multicoloured”) + -ենի (-eni, “fur/skin suffix”).[1] Compare Middle Persian bwl (bōr, “reddish-brown, bay, chestnut (horse)”), Northern Kurdish bor (“grey”), Persian بور (bur); see there for more. The original meaning of բորենի (boreni) may have been “fur of hyena”. See also բոր (bor), բորեկ (borek).
On the other hand, Ačaṙyan derives from the o-grade of Proto-Indo-European *bʰer- (“brown”), whence Lithuanian bė́ras (“brown”), Proto-Germanic *brūnaz (“brown”), *berô (“bear”), Proto-Indo-European *bʰébʰrus (“beaver”).[2][3]
