قبعة
Arabic
Etymology
From Classical Syriac ܩܘܒܥܐ (qūḇᵊʿā, “hood”), from Western Aramaic קובעא (kōḇᵊʿā), cognate with Hebrew כּוֹבַע (kóḇaʿ), קּוֹבַע (kóḇaʿ, “helmet; turban”), while Ge'ez ቆብዕ (ḳobʿ, “hood, cap”) is also from Aramaic. As first proposed by Theodor Gaster, the source is Hittite [script needed] (kupaḫi-, “headgear”) which is cognate with Ancient Greek κεφαλή (kephalḗ), Latin caput, Proto-Germanic *haubudą etc. For the semantic rationale, the helmet as a headgear has spread from Asia Minor, thus the borrowing, but then the word was in Western Aramaic vulgarized to mean other kinds of headwear still relatable to helmets in shape, as turbans in Hebrew, whereas now Arabic has deviated from the original meaning completely by using the word for the Western-style hat.
