Mediated via Egyptian pꜣ-ꜣbw from Proto-Afro-Asiatic *eḷu (“elephant”). The term has spread across the ancient Middle East, compare Akkadian 𒄠𒋛 (pīru, AM.SI), Arabic فِيل (fīl), Hebrew פִּיל (pîl), Old Armenian փիղ (pʿił), Sanskrit पीलु (pīlu), Persian پیل (pīl).
