Etymology
Uncertain. Possibly ultimately from a derivative of Proto-Indo-European *h₂enh₁mos, a nominal derivative of *h₂enh₁- (“breathe”) (see अन् (an, “to breathe”)). Compare Ancient Greek ἄνεμος (ánemos, “wind, breeze”), Old Armenian անձն (anjn, “person”) and հողմ (hołm, “wind”), Old Frisian omma (“breath”), Latin animus, anima.
