Etymology
From Sanskrit इष्टका (iṣṭakā), from Proto-Indo-European *yes- (“foam; boil”). Cognate with Oriya ଇଟା (iṭa), Bengali ইট (iṭ), Hindustani اینٹ / ईंट (īṇṭ), Avestan 𐬌𐬱𐬙𐬌𐬌𐬀 (ištiia, “brick”), Persian خشت (xešt, “brick”), Hittite 𒅖𒈾𒀸 (išnāš, “dough”) and Tocharian B iścem (“clay”).
