From Old Assamese উশাস (uśaso), from Sanskrit *উৎশ্ৱাস (utśvāsa), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱʷes- (to pant, puff, sigh). Cognate with Sylheti ꠃꠀ (ua), Oriya ଉସାସ (usasô, relief from disease, ease), Marathi उसासा (usāsā, sigh, suspiration), Hindi उसांस (usāns), उसास (usās). Doublet of শ্বাস (sax).
