From Old Khmer kruṅ, kruṅa, kuruṅ, kuruṅ (“to rule, to govern; king, prince; ruler, governor; head, chief, master; kingdom, realm; city-state; etc”); ultimately from Proto-Mon-Khmer *kruŋ (“to confine”). Cognate with Modern Khmer ក្រុង (krong).
