Borrowed from from Sanskrit कन्या (kanyā, “girl, virgin, daughter”), Pali kaññā (“young girl”), from Proto-Indo-European *ken- (“new, fresh”), whence also कनीन (kanī́na, “young, youthful”). Cognates include Latin re-cēns (“recent; fresh; young”) and Ancient Greek καινός (kainós, “new”).
