Loaned from Sanskrit उषपा (uṣapā) combined from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éwsōs (“dawn”), cognates including Latin Aurora, aurora, Ancient Greek Ἠώς (Ēṓs), ἠώς (ēṓs) and possibly Old English Ēostre, as well as from Proto-Indo-European *péh₂wr̥ (compare Hittite 𒉺𒀪𒄯 (paḫḫur), Umbrian pir, Tocharian A por, Tocharian B puwar, Czech pȳř (“hot ashes”), Ancient Greek πῦρ (pûr, “fire”), Armenian հուր (hur, “fire”)) and perhaps Albanian prush (“embers”). This was an inanimate noun whose animate counterpart was Proto-Indo-European *h₁n̥gʷnis.
